Setting
One of my biggest goals right now is to have a better way for students to provide feed back and cooperate as they learn. (CITW best practices). For this, I have fallen in love with BackChannel Chats. We used them for 75% of the sessions I sat in at MACUL. Interestingly, I see adults do they same things as my 5th graders. Jokes, comments that add nothing, strange comments, etc. The use of this tool enables me to teach so much more than just cool chatting. I am now teaching what a constructive and meaningful discussion looks like, what is good Internet Citizenship and why is it important, etc. They are still learning this so my chat looks more like chatter yet, but we are having some good discussions about it so I am seeing some change. It really contributes to ownership and depth of the discussion too.
This project also supports ISTE 1a,b, and c as students discuss real world issues and make their voice heard. I get so much more discussion outside of the backchannel if I give them a chance to chat about it this way first. I found that it is a good idea to stop the chat and have them review what was said before moving on because it is hard to read and type as it flies by (even for me).

My Lesson
My lesson is for my 5th grade class. We take a career test, research options, schooling , income, etc. and learn how to create spread sheet. It generates many discussions about the positives and negatives about each thing.
I will be using Todaysmeet twice for this lesson. The first is to just get a discussion going about reactions and positives and negatives in regards to their choice.

I also used Tagzedo to great a great thought starter as I introduced the lesson. I am going to have them find a career site and create their own so they can discuss what terms are the most frequent.
The Final Lesson
Most of the comments were good. Two were not and one was very inappropriate. It gave me a chance to discuss what a constructive chat should look like vs a "hey, how ya doing" with friends. The Chat started a great discussion and then they took a career test I have done this lesson for a while and I really enjoyed the feedback. I think this is a winner! |
